Manor House
German writer Hermann Hesse, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, published his strongly autobiographical novel The Mansion House in 1914. In it, he deals with his own personal, family and artistic crisis, which he experienced during his marriage to photographer Maria Bernoulli. The hero of his prose, the successful and wealthy painter Veraguth, feels that his marriage to the pianist Adéla is in ruins and that there is a deep discord and estrangement between the couple. The only thing that still unites them is their youngest son Pierre. The unhappy Veraguth would like to escape from the union, he left Adela and the palatial mansion, in which they live together, and set out on a journey to India, but his wife urges him to be reasonable, wants to preserve the marriage, even if it's only formal. Veraguth won't commit an act just to avoid losing his beloved son. However, little Pierre gets meningitis and his illness brings the couple back together for a while. When the boy dies, the painter finally plucks up the courage to leave his wife and the comfort of his home and sets off to India to find himself.
