Matuska Waldemar: Waldemar Matuska sings - LP

Some things just can't be invented better - and this first LP by Waldemar Matuška is one of them. In the then Supraphon strategy of launching an album discography with a compilation of singles, it was possible to create a profile of the first phase of Matusek's successful career that is still valid today. He was masculine in appearance and voice, technically and expressively well-equipped singer with the necessary feeling for the choice of repertoire. There is no doubt that the songs from the semaphore period (Aria of the Moon, Song for Zuzana, Tereza or the duet with Eva Pilarova Oh, Ta láska nebeská) were instrumental in his start to the heights of our pop. By adding songs of American film origin (Be Still with Me), folk songs (Yeah, the Cherries Have Risen, Texas Roses) or appropriate domestic songs (Heavenly Cowboy, Wild Horses), a kind of western Waldemar was created. That this was far from all he could offer is shown by the typically different songs Mrholí, Slaný děšt' (Salty Rain) and Mám malý tent (I Have a Small Tent). Jiří Šlitr or Karel Mareš wrote several ideal melodies for him, and Jiří Suchý or Jan Schneider wrote them into songs that can be rightly described as unforgettable. The stylishly iconic cover, the new vinyl remastering and the original sleevenote symbolize this anniversary re-release for Matusek's ninetieth birthday in July. A definitive piece of excellent reminiscences of the entry stage of his well-deserved and ongoing popularity.
