Midwife from Berlin
Auschwitz, 1943: I stroke my beautiful baby’s hair. It’s a miracle that it’s blonde, because that’s what will keep her alive, that’s what will keep her safe. Soon they will come and take my little Pip from Auschwitz-Birkenau – they will take her from me. But as long as she is alive, I have hope that I will find my daughter again…
1945, Berlin: Ester Pasternak has walked through the gates of Auschwitz on the verge of collapse. She has survived against all odds, but her heart-wrenching journey is only just beginning. In the camp, she gave birth to a tiny, fair-haired baby girl, who was immediately taken from her and placed with a German family. The war is over, and Ester is desperate to find her little girl.
But chaos reigns in Europe, Jewish families have been torn apart, and everyone is desperately searching for their loved ones. In every orphanage and hospital Ester visits, she scans the tearful faces of toddlers, and whenever she spots blonde hair and blue eyes, her heart starts to pound…
But as the months and years go by, the chances of finding her daughter diminish. Will Ester manage to find the child with a tattoo that matches her own? Or is it already too late…?
