Mordparta Ostrava

The Cases of Luboš Valerián, Head of the Ostrava Crime Squad

A deviant who bludgeoned women to death with a stone. A monster who raped his victims with a willow branch. A phantom who murdered miners in a deep mine. A pensioner who vented his frustration with Semtex... This is just a fraction of the cases handled by the former investigator and head of the General Crime Department of the Regional Directorate of the Police of the Czech Republic for the Moravian-Silesian Region, Luboš Valerián, who also headed the Ostrava homicide squad until 2022. During his career, he was involved in the investigation of more than a thousand of the most serious crimes in the Ostrava region – a region that has often surpassed even Prague in violent crime statistics. He hunted monsters who murdered their victims without batting an eye, driven by greed, jealousy, and sexual deviance. Twelve stories that have left an indelible mark on the history of Czech criminology will terrify, shock, and force the reader to reflect on the value of human life. Many of them have not been published in detail before and are almost unknown to the general public.
The collaboration between journalist Tomáš Lánský and Colonel Luboš Valerián has resulted in a book that tells the stories of not only the murderers but also their victims and the often-overlooked bereaved. The individual chapters present the reader with the methods used to capture and convict the perpetrators, as well as analysing similar cases from the history of Czech criminology. The book is accompanied by over 170 previously unpublished photographs from police archives.
