My year 1956
Turbulent political upheavals, the fear of another war, floods, but also an industrial boom, a rising standard of living, and a cultural awakening. The year 1956 can certainly not be described as boring. Quite the opposite. At the 20th Congress of the CPSU, Nikita Khrushchev definitively buried Stalinism. The standard of living was slowly rising. However, the countryside was haunted by collectivisation. The cultural environment gradually relaxed, preparing the ground for bigger changes in the following decade.
