Enzo Macleod returns to solve two murders seventy years apart.
In a sleepy French village, the roots of an uprooted tree pull the corpse of a man with a bullet in his head out of the ground. A week later, a well-known art critic is murdered in cold blood in a nearby house. However, the two murders are separated by more than 70 years.
Forensic expert Enzo Macleod is asked to examine the scene of the first murder, and before he knows it, he is helping with the investigation of the second case. Two stories begin to unfold - one from the past, from the years of the wartime occupation of France, when officials of the Third Reich coveted the ultimate work of European art, the Mona Lisa. The second story takes place in the present, in the autumn of 2020, when France is reeling from the second wave of the covid pandemic. Is it possible that the two cases are somehow related? And how far back does the chain of events go that began when Jacques Jaujard, director of the National Museum in Paris, decided to save the masterpieces of the Louvre from Nazi looting?
