Occupational medicine
Occupational medicine comprehensively deals with the relationship between work and human health. This field sets the requirements for creating a safe and healthy working environment, addresses the adaptation of work to the abilities of employees while considering their physical and mental health, and focuses on promoting employee health, including assessing their medical fitness for work. It also examines the effects of work and working conditions on the development of chronic non-communicable diseases, the course of which can be significantly and negatively influenced by work and working conditions. Occupational medicine uses the knowledge gained from studying the level of working condition factors and their impact on employee health and well-being to guide measures for ensuring health protection at work, optimising working conditions, and maintaining long-term work ability.
The book also takes into account the requirements of the Framework Directive 89/391/EEC, defining basic concepts such as hazard, risk and its assessment, management, communication, and perception. It discusses the issue of the body's exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and psychophysiological factors. It contains recommendations for the analysis and assessment of risks at work, which are useful for the daily practice of occupational health service providers (occupational and general practitioners) and collaborating specialisms (e.g., neurology, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology). It outlines the principles of workplace inspections, and the purpose, content, and frequency of preventative medical check-ups. It clearly summarises occupational diseases, the threat of occupational diseases, occupational injuries, and work-related illnesses. It mentions the current issue of risks associated with substance use and discusses in detail the relationship between a doctor and their contractual employer. The book also includes an essential terminological dictionary, an overview of European and national legislation, and international standards.
The authors of the publication are leading experts in the field and, together with renowned reviewers and colleagues from practice, they guarantee a high professional standard and the practical usability of the text.
