Old woman
Knocking from Beyond the Grave
Markéta and Hanka grew up together in the same house, an old converted villa in a quiet part of town. From childhood, they forged a strong friendship that lasted into adulthood. When Hanka suddenly dies and the police close the case as a suicide, Markéta begins to investigate on her own. From the fragments of information she pieces together, a terrifying reality gradually begins to emerge. Her friend was being haunted by a spectre, and Markéta starts to feel that it has now latched onto her. An old woman is on her tail, and Markéta must discover not only her identity, but also how to get rid of the crone before she gets rid of her. What should have been buried deep in the house's history suddenly floats to the surface, and the past becomes the present.
A quick tap-tap-tap. Markéta grumbled something discontentedly in her sleep. Tap-tap-tap. Oh, come on, it's the middle of the night, she wanted to say, but her tongue was so heavy that it remained just a thought. Tap-tap-tap, came the relentless sound from the other side of the wall. It's night, I'm sleeping, you can tell me in the morning. Tap-tap-tap.
It had been more than ten years since they had last used these signals. After they both got mobile phones, the knocking was replaced by more sophisticated arrangements, yet the simple tapping on the wall remained firmly ingrained in Markéta. Even in her sleep, she could distinguish the quick triple tap, which meant 'are you there?', from the slow triple tap, which meant 'shall we go out?'.
Tap-tap-tap, it came, loud and insistent. What could that Hanka want?
