On the Brink of Nuclear War
Atomic weapons are developed and produced never to be used—such was the slogan of the nuclear arms race between the world powers after the Second World War. Yet, it very nearly wasn't true. On several occasions, both the Soviet and American sides considered the possibility of a first nuclear strike, starting as early as 1949 and most recently in the 1980s. During this period, a nuclear alert was declared at least two hundred times by both sides, where, due to technical or human error, the countdown to launching nuclear weapons began.
So why did it never happen in the end?
The answer to this question, along with a wealth of interesting information, technical data, and previously unpublished facts about the threat of atomic war, awaits the reader in this new book by an experienced and renowned non-fiction author.
