The British Isles were not the optimal place to live in the 13th century. An already poor country still funded its King Richard' s ambitious crusades. In the ranks of his troops, the nameless archer Robin ( Russell Crowe ) defended the problematic honor of the English crown. He becomes an eyewitness to the king' s death during the siege of the French castle and, together with several companions, decides on his own to get home as quickly as possible to England after years of wandering around the world.

He finds himself in the county of Nottingham, which is controlled by an unscrupulous sheriff ( Matthew Mcfadyen ). Few can resist him, one exception being Lady Marion ( Cate Blanchett ), who manages her father-in-law' s estate ( Max von Sydow ) while her husband fights for the king. The situation worsens after Richard' s death, when the weak King John ascends the throne with the court whisperer Gisborn ( Mark Strong ), who secretly plotts a French invasion of the country.
