New Religion and Espionage Mechanics
The expansion introduces faith as a new resource, allowing you to found and customise your own religion. You can then spread it across the world to gain various advantages. With the arrival of the Renaissance, the option of espionage opens up. You can send your agents to foreign cities, where they will gather secret information and technology, or carry out covert operations. At the same time, improved diplomacy allows you to establish embassies in foreign courts to strengthen relations.
New Content for Your Empire
Gods & Kings enriches the game with nine new civilisations, including the Carthaginians, the Dutch, the Celts, and the Maya. Each has its own unique units, buildings, and leaders, such as William I of the Netherlands or Boudica. You also have access to nine new wonders of the world, including Neuschwanstein Castle, the Terracotta Army, and the Hubble Space Telescope. The game is further expanded with three original scenarios set in the medieval period, the fall of the Roman Empire, and the Empires of the Smoky Skies era.
Reworked Combat System and Diplomacy
The fight for world domination is now more dynamic thanks to a reworked combat system and improved artificial intelligence that places greater emphasis on a balanced army composition. Naval forces are now divided into melee and ranged ships, so coastal cities are no longer safe. Two new types of city-states, mercantile and religious, have also been added, providing you with new advantages. The quest system has been adjusted, and the increased importance of gold adds further gameplay options.
