Sinopoli / Odop: Nabucco (selection) Giuseppe Sinopoli - CD

Nabucco is the title of Giuseppe Verdi' s opera from 1842. The author of the libretto is Temistocle Solera. The name of the opera was created by shortening the name of the biblical figure - King Nebuchadnezzar II.

After the failure of his second opera, One Day by the King, Verdi was ready to end his composing career. Nabucco' s libretto was essentially imposed on him, and against his will he became so interested that he decided to implement it. The huge success of this Verdi in the order of the third opera meant his return to the career of a composer.

Although Nabucco is only Verdi' s third opera, he has succeeded in creating a very suggestive work on a biblical theme. In the libretto, he was first fascinated by the beginning of Psalm 136 “Va, pensiero, sull' ali dorate“ (Fly, thought, on golden wings. ) and inspired him to spontaneously compose a choir, whose fiery melody and rhythm made it a liberation song sung throughout Italy.

He then completed the entire opera in a matter of weeks. The passionate music of the work, dealing with the liberation of the Jews from Babylonian captivity, fully corresponded with the mood of the population, interested in the desire for liberation from Austro-Habsburg power and the unification of Italy.
