An old war veteran, wanting to spice up his lonely existence, enters Alpha Rome.
This virtual world gives him the opportunity to feel young again and get a final taste of the spice of life. The prospect of death is no longer a concern, as anyone who dies here is reborn through replication in specially designed capsules. Volper's military experience, keen eye, and refined negotiation skills help him get off to a successful start, but his opinion of the project itself changes dramatically. More and more questions surface, but the answers are nowhere in sight.
Why have people with psionic abilities been declared dangerous mutants and a war waged against them? How can one obtain the profession of a scurfaifer, and why is everyone who tries to do so persecuted? What are people from his past, people he thought were dead, doing in the Alpha Rome project?
