The book is a successful university textbook of the Slovene language for students of Slovene and Slavic studies, and is also intended for all those who are interested in Slovene culture and literature and wish to learn the Slovene language in the process. This fifth, updated edition retains the original concept and methodology, but provides a thorough linguistic revision of all eleven lessons, taking into account the development of the Slovene language and linguistics. The chapter 'Basic information on the Slovene literary language' has been expanded, and the chapter 'Phonology of the Slovene literary language' explains phenomena relating to the pronunciation of sounds and stress, based on the findings of contemporary Slovene phonetics. Both bilingual dictionaries have also been updated to assist in reading the texts contained in the 'Reader', which is compiled from original Slovene texts. The Reader introduces the social and functional styles of Slovene and the use of grammatical forms and structures covered in each lesson.
