A story of the search for identity and truth in the age of social media
The title of Ondřej Štindl's new novel contains a message that is only seemingly straightforward and clear. Who is saying this, and to whom? Who is sharing something with whom? Who is passing something on, and to whom? Is it a gift or a burden? The book's main character, Luky, a young man from modern-day Prague, moves from these questions to asking the most fundamental ones. Who am I? Where are my true roots? What have I lost in the past, and what can I gain in the present? What can my will do against the legacy of my ancestors, even unknown ones, and the plans of those closest to me? Where does so-called true reality end and the falsehood of social media and deception – of others and of oneself – begin? Is it easier to direct your own life or to accept a role in a fictional virtual drama?
And what happens when these two worlds and two identities meet and intersect? As we have come to expect from the author's previous prose, the eminently existential questions here are not posed and opened in a pretentiously 'heavyweight' form. On the contrary: a cleverly escalating story awaits the reader, one that will not let them catch their breath and in which grotesque, sadness, desire, sarcasm, despair and muted hope intertwine – everything that is an inseparable part of this type of questioning and often futile search for answers.
