Twenty-three-year-old Maddie's mother has died, and although their relationship was a painful one, full of empty bottles and unspoken words, it left behind a silence and guilt that hurts even more. She has no plan, just a notebook full of lyrics and a dream of writing songs that might one day mean something. And just when she doesn't know what to do next, an offer arrives from her uncle – the famous country star Brian Harley, whom she hasn't seen in three years.
His house in Tennessee is everything she hasn't experienced in so long. Safe and full of music and warmth. But Brian doesn't live there alone. Her new housemate is Nathaniel, a reserved man who, from the very beginning, isn't afraid to show he's not interested in her friendship.
Every chord, every lyric, every look slowly brings Maddie back to herself. And to a life where, for the first time, she allows herself to believe that she is worth something and that her mother was wrong.
