Surgeon's successes and disappointments
The book The Surgeon's Successes and Disappointments spans the time arc from the early 1950s to the present day and thus presents a documentary that tells the true story, with insight and irony, of the destructive practices of the pre-November 1970s that affected all spheres of social life and human activity, including medicine and its protagonists. It features important figures of Czech medicine, with whom the author, prof. MUDr. Miloš Hájek, CSc., met during his studies and later at his workplace: among them surgeon Arnold Jirásek, the famous internist Josef Charvát, orthopedist Jan Zahradníček, gynecologist Josef Jerie, Emil Dienstbier, Jiri Niederle, Zdeněk Mysliveček, František Patočka, brother of philosopher Jan Patočka, pathologist Josef Hepner, Emerich Polák, a Vinohrady surgeon close to him, and many others.
The author has been travelling since his youth: he travels for pleasure and for knowledge, and he accompanies his friends through foreign countries with the same fascination with which he describes his life experiences. In the most absurd social situations and in his profession, often accompanied by exciting adrenaline adventures, he did not cease to see surgery as a "science and art divine" and did not abandon his vision of the surgeon, his desire to deepen knowledge and thus expand the boundaries of action, the purpose of which is to protect the gift of life.
