The boys from Glasgow
A captivating debut exploring the power of identity and community
Despite a troubled childhood and difficult circumstances, eighteen-year-old Finlay has just started studying nursing at the University of Glasgow. He grew up in residential and foster care, which means that now, on the brink of adulthood, he has no one to lean on. As if the world wasn't scary enough on its own. How is he supposed to write essays, focus on his nursing practice, and live a normal student life when he can barely support himself?
Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Banjo is trying to settle into a new foster family, finish secondary school, and hold down a job. But anger and fear are battling inside him, threatening his already precarious future. He doesn't know what will become of him, but he suspects it won't be anything good. Just three years ago, Finlay and Banjo were as close as brothers.
But something happened between them, and their paths diverged. Their shared past haunts them both, preventing them from moving on. If they want to keep their loved ones close, they must forgive each other. And also find a way to forgive themselves.
What they're saying about the book:
A beautiful book! Glasgow Boys is a tender-hearted celebration of love and friendship. I really cared about Finlay and Banjo and all the people around them and I rooted for them so hard. Margaret McDonald is a wonderful talent and I’d advise you to buy this novel for everyone who makes you laugh.

Glasgow Boys is aimed at young adult readers. It avoids explicit content and radiates an optimism that might seem almost too welcoming. Yet it is a heartfelt and moving novel about love and vulnerability, shame and stigma, loneliness, acceptance, and overcoming fear.

This beautifully written book, full of love and anger, hope and pain, marks Margaret McDonald as a new promise in YA fiction.

A painfully raw exploration of male friendship, sexuality and what it means to love.
