The burning cross

I would walk through fire again for love itself

Rain, accompanied by a cold mist, soaks the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Family and friends gather at Fraser's Ridge to celebrate the wedding of daughter Brianna. Everyone hopes they have finally found a safe home. But peace is as fleeting as a storm. In 1771, tensions are rising between the corrupt colonial government and the backcountry settlers. Scottish immigrant Jamie Fraser, who has been granted a coveted piece of land in the wilderness, is drawn into the conflict. Together with his fellow countrymen, he tries to build a new community. His fingers, mutilated in an English prison, are a daily reminder of which side he belongs on. However, the Governor, the Crown's representative, holds a dangerous trump card against the Highlander… Jamie's wife Claire, a skilled medic gifted with the ability to see into the future, is his constant support. This exceptional gift has saved their skins before, but it has also thrown them into many dangers. What service will it provide this time? Claire, acting as the local healer and herbalist, witnesses the strange death of a Black female slave and embarks on a risky investigation involving an illegal autopsy. She suspects the servant was murdered. While the community fights for survival, the country hurtles towards a war that will change the face of the continent and the course of history.
