Jack Irish #3
THE IDIOSYNCRATIC PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR JACK IRISH IS BACK, AND SO IS ANOTHER BAFFLING CASE.
It takes a lot to get Jack Irish down. But when a cold, damp winter grips Melbourne, his mood drops well below freezing. That's why, at first, he doesn't pay much attention to a job from his occasional employer, Cyril Wootton: to find a certain Robbie Colburn.
However, things take a turn when Jack discovers that the missing barman is likely already dead, and also that his real client is the well-known judge, Colin Loder. The judge isn't so much interested in Robbie himself as he is in a photo album that was stolen from him. A photo album whose publication would end Loder's stellar career and which someone is now using to blackmail him.
In this case, no one and nothing is as it first seems, and things get even more complicated when the names of corrupt police officers, tough thugs, and Melbourne's high society begin to surface. The slightest lapse in vigilance can suddenly have fatal consequences.
Can Jack get to the truth before it costs him his life?
PETER TEMPLE
One of Australia's most acclaimed contemporary crime writers, he was born in South Africa in 1946. In 1982, he moved to Melbourne, where he worked mainly as a journalist and teacher. However, he became famous a little later for his novels, especially his four crime thrillers featuring the idiosyncratic private investigator Jack Irish (Bad Debts, Black Tide, The Long-Lost Friend, White Dog). Czech readers are also familiar with the detective novel The Broken Shore (for which Temple was the first Australian to receive the prestigious British Gold Dagger award) and its loose sequel, Truth. The author's books have been translated into more than twenty languages, have won numerous other awards, and the Jack Irish series was adapted into a film and television series starring Guy Pearce. Peter Temple lived with his wife Anita and son Nicholas in Ballarat, Australia, until his premature death in 2018.
