The Glass Menagerie: contains 2 CDs

One of the most famous texts of American playwriting won the New York Critics' Choice Award soon after its first performance (1944), has been made into a film several times and has been staged almost continuously on stages around the world since its creation.

A story inspired by her own fate and the closest family members - her mother and her sick sister. It returns to the pre-World War II American South, but the historical anchoring is merely a frame for a timeless image of eternal passing, of unfulfilled dreams of a reality other than the one we are forced to live.

Tom works as a warehouseman in a shoe company and his salary is the only income that the family uses to pay for a small apartment on the outskirts of town and other expenses. He runs away from work to write poetry or to the world of film stories offered by the local cinema and has only one desire - to leave. Just like his father once did. To leave a stereotypical and empty job, a grey, cramped apartment and above all a loving, unbearable mother, immersed in a bath of memories of her own youth. What prevents him from taking a decisive step is mainly the slightly disabled Laura, desperately scared of communication with her surroundings and closed into her own world of glass animals, to which she devotes all her attention and affection. When it turns out that she is not even able to finish business school, the only way out is to marry Laura.

For a moment, it seems as if the dream might become reality when the spontaneous and charismatic Jim turns Laura's shame and distrust into a gentle, soulful beauty.

Reality, however, does not usually give someone a happy ending and these strange courtships, unfortunately, are no exception.

Yet the story of four intersecting and passing destinies captivates with its urgency, the vitality of its characters and the subtlety with which it reveals the shy landscapes of the soul. The radio production, with its extraordinary cast and impressive sound design, lets it speak in unexpected tones that will linger in the ears of listeners for a long time.
