The human brain

This book was created as an updated edition of the monograph The Human Brain (2000, 2002), as scientific developments have largely surpassed the content of previous editions. This new edition, for the first time richly illustrated, describes the functional systems of the human brain in general, visual, auditory and tactile cognition, memory, language, praxis, laterality, emotion, consciousness and attention; the final chapter covers executive functions. The monograph is based on the author's lectures on the relationship between the brain and behaviour, which have been held at the 3rd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague for almost twenty years. The book is addressed primarily to doctors, psychologists and philosophers interested in the development of cognitive and affective neuroscience, but it will certainly be read with interest by educated people from other fields. In the preface, the author warns that the book is demanding, the text is dense, and the reading is arduous. However, it is certainly worth the effort to understand the most complex system in the universe – the human brain.
