Dodge City was a famous cattle town, where cowboys from far and wide, and even from other states, drove cattle from their ranches. They sold them to local dealers, whose opportunities and profits grew particularly significantly after the establishment of the railway, for which this town was an important hub supplying the increasingly populous East. In such an environment, many people prospered, and the growing affluence attracted ever more newcomers.
