The Shadow of Death

Castle ruins hide a long-buried secret

All it took was a thoughtless punch and a few false accusations, and historian Záviš Brieftrager was forced to exchange his teaching position at Charles University for a menial job at a monument restoration company. However, he does not expect peace even at the excavations at Dívčí Kamen, the ruins of the Rožmberk residence near České Budějovice.
The discovery of an old skull might not mean anything – unless other remains, obviously of a younger date, follow. Could they belong to farmer Antonín Dvořák, who was allegedly taken away from nearby Holubov in a black limousine by StB officers in the 1950s? But how did they get to the castle then? And what connects their owners with the fate of a medieval nobleman?
Záviš is unable to fix his own life, but perhaps he could at least solve the mystery of the two skeletal remains. But the deeper he delves into the case, the more he understands the futility that Oldřich of Rožmberk felt when he tried to catch foreign spies on Dívčí Kamen in the fifteenth century.
At the same time, he discovers that not everyone wants the truth to come out. Even if it meant silencing Záviš…
A thrilling detective story about deep grievances, time-barred crimes, and well-kept secrets.

Egon Trnka

Egon Trnka (*1963) was born and lives in Prague. Although he studied history at Charles University, he did not remain professionally in the field. In the past he worked as a clerk, journalist or seasonal worker. He is currently working in an international corporation and is putting his love of history into his literary work. He began to work on this subject already during the previous regime, but his first attempts did not pass through the censorship net of the time, and so they ended up in a drawer. Although he did not find time to write for a long time, he never gave up his dream of becoming a writer. He eventually fulfilled it through his Crime Scene series of detective novels. Egon Trnka lives in a small apartment in Prague's Holešovice, where he is kept company by nosy pigeons and a cat too lazy to scare them away.
