The singing of the dead
The hunt for a psychotic killer leads Kate Shugak to a ninety-year-old crime...
The state of Alaska is preparing for another election, and this time, it's shaping up to be quite an event. For the first time in history, an indigenous woman is running for District 41. Anne Gordaoff has a great chance of success, but not everyone wishes her victory, as evidenced by the anonymous threatening letters she has been receiving.
Private investigator Kate Shugak eventually accepts the task of ensuring the candidate's safety during the election campaign. Although she's not too keen on it, it provides her with the financial means to care for her son, Jack Morgan. However, on the very first day of her service, a murder occurs, and it won't be the last.
If Kate wants to find the killer, she needs to connect the clues correctly. Is it about money, power, or political scheming? Or perhaps the real motive lies hidden somewhere else, forcing Kate to delve deep into the past, all the way back to the Klondike Gold Rush in 1915?
However, few suspect how a ninety-year-old unsolved case could be connected to the rampage of a modern-day psychotic killer…
Dana Stabenow
Dana Stabenow was born in 1952 in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up on a fishing boat where, between bouts of seasickness, she wrote stories about 'normal' children growing up on land and made her mother read them. She studied journalism at the University of Alaska and then set off on a four-month backpacking trip across Europe. Upon her return, she worked for Alyeska Pipeline and British Petroleum, and in her thirties, she decided she didn't want to spend her life in the thrall of oil tycoons and would rather become a poor writer. She promised herself she would publish her first book before she was completely broke, and she managed it just in the nick of time. In 1991, her debut novel, Second Star, was published, followed a year later by the first instalment of the popular Kate Shugak series, titled A Cold Day for Murder, which won an Edgar Award in 1993.
