A sparse novel with elements of black humour Too Many Funerals or When Flowers Speak by Milona Čepelka
This witty novel with elements of black humour is intended for listening and reflection for people of several generations, as it depicts the lives of three generations of the Dojáček family. We meet the domineering grandfather Fána, who cannot accept that his daughter has decided to live her own life at the age of fifty, and decides to take a fateful action... We follow the story of Fána's ambitious son Vilém, whose only mission in life is to control the lives of his loved ones. Finally, there is Vilém's son Kamil, a successful but generally conformist man for whom the highest value is a well-functioning family. He is shaken from his calm by an incredible piece of news that sheds a whole new light on his family history.
Let us add the titles of the chapters, which testify, among other things, to the author's fragile, playful and poetic soul: The heart is beautiful, White Lily, Cactus, Kala, Peony, Rose, Sakura, Carnation, Hyacinth.
"Dear those of you who have chosen to listen, I know that the title Too Many Funerals, or When Flowers Speak, may seem inappropriate in coronavirus times. But please - don't be discouraged. When I wrote the following stories some time ago, I wanted to show where fear, prejudice and self-deception take us. And that's as true yesterday as it is today or the day after tomorrow. Thank you. “
