Upshaw, Kalish, Percussion: Narrow Sea - CD
American composer, violinist, and singer Caroline Shaw first came to prominence in 2013 when she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her a cappella piece, Partita for 8 Voices. Her new album, 'Narrow Sea', is now being released by Nonesuch Records, a collaboration with soprano Dawn Upshaw, pianist Gilbert Kalish, and the percussion quartet So Percussion. The title composition, which she wrote for these specific performers in 2017, is divided into five parts. The texts for all are based on 'The Sacred Harp', a collection of hymns first published in the 19th century that became widely popular in the English-speaking world. However, the origins of the texts are much older, with some referencing the biblical River Jordan. The album is complemented by the single-movement piece 'Taxidermy', which Shaw composed for the So Percussion ensemble back in 2012.
