At the end of August 1942, Albert Camus wrote in his diary: Plague. I can' t get out of this. Too many coincidences when writing. It is necessary to stick to the idea strictly. A stranger portrays a man' s exposure to absurdity. Plague profound equivalence of individual aspects in the face of the same absurdity. It is a progress that will be specified in future works. However, the plague also proves that absurdity does not teach anything. That is definitive progress. “ It seems that a few sketchy remarks may be the key to reading a novel that Camus did not publish until five years later, in 1947. His plot set in the Algerian city of Oran. He knew him intimately from his stays and he also knew the history of the local cholera epidemic. It killed most of the city' s inhabitants in 1849. Camus pushed the plot back to 1940, which may have contributed to the novel' s interpretation of and resistance to the Vichy collaborating regime. However, a more detailed study of Camus' s work, especially the philosophical treatises The Myth of Sysif and The Revolting Man, inevitably raises doubts as to whether this interpretation is too simplistic.
