Inspector Erin Crane is assigned to investigate the murder of sixteen-year-old gymnast Sophie Madson. She is joined on the case by her partner, Chief Inspector Tom Radley, with whom Erin has built a close professional bond over the years. They share a similar investigative style and are united by their mutual dislike of one of their superiors, Superintendent Walker.
However, this case will test their relationship far more than they anticipated – Tom discovers that Erin falsified evidence during a previous investigation, sending an innocent person to prison. Surprisingly, this revelation brings them closer, and they become lovers.
But the idyll doesn't last long. It soon comes to light that Tom knew the murder victim, Sophie Madson, but failed to disclose this to anyone. Suddenly, Chief Inspector Radley becomes suspect number one, and tensions begin to boil over in the small town. Erin no longer knows who she can trust, and the detested Walker seizes every opportunity to complicate her life. The inspector must therefore uncover exactly what happened on that fateful day as quickly as possible, and determine whether Tom is truly responsible for Sophie's death, or if the truth is something else entirely…
