Winter Sleep + Dheepan (2DVD) - DVD

Winter Sleep (Zimní spánek) 2014 / Drama / 196 / Turkey, Germany, France
“Beneath the layers of cold snow, the flames of human emotion burn.”

Aydin, a former actor, owns a small hotel in central Anatolia where he lives with his much younger wife, Nihal, and his sister, Necla, who is recovering from a recent divorce. The tourist season is slowly ending, and the surrounding landscape is beginning to be veiled in white snow. During this time, the hotel becomes a sanctuary, but also a place from which there is no escape—a place that reopens old wounds and fuels the mutual resentment of its inhabitants.

In his film Winter Sleep, Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan delivers an in-depth character study, much like his previous work. Through alienation, existentialism, and the details of daily life, he creates a remarkable portrait of different social classes (the rich, the poor, teachers, servants, etc.). This “masterpiece, whose true gift is its sincerity,” was awarded the Palme d'Or, the highest festival prize, by the Main Jury at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, adding to Ceylan's extensive collection of film trophies. Among them are two Grand Prix awards and a Best Director award for his previous films Distant (2002), Three Monkeys (2008), and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011), also screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
