Young people engaged in climate issues, the European Union, or disputes with local councils are attracting the interest of both the media and the public. The reactions to their activities in the online space offer an opportunity to observe how the meaning of the term “activism” is being shaped in the Czech media context. This book shows how the Czech public approaches the civic and political activities of children and young people. It focuses on the media construction of childhood as non-adulthood, as a certain insufficiency, and its locally specific forms, which also take into account the post-socialist context of Czechia. It offers answers to questions about the expectations placed on young people and their active citizenship, the ways in which their possibility for political engagement is denied, and how they are represented as “the others” in both generational and intergenerational comparisons.
