Sodium butyrate, a source of butyric acid, is the main source of energy for the intestinal epithelium. Butyric acid is formed in the colon as one of the main products of fibre fermentation by the gut microbiota. They make up approximately 70-90% of all short-chain fatty acids in this region. Disturbances in the composition of the gut microbiota and a low-fibre diet can lead to reduced butyric acid production. To support its production, it is advisable to consume foods rich in fibre, like vegetables, fruit, whole grain products, legumes, nuts and seeds. Prebiotics (such as inulin and FOS) and probiotics (yogurt, kefir, pickled vegetables) may also be beneficial, along with limiting the intake of processed foods. Sodium butyrate is also a natural component of dairy and fermented products. However, it is not always possible to ensure a sufficient supply of butyric acid through the diet; in such cases, supplementation can be an effective solution.
