Záleží na licenci a licenčních podmínkách Microsoftu které toto mohou omezit. Zpravidla pokud se jedná o počítač s již předinstalovaným OS, takzvaný OEM, tak toto možné není. Zakoupené krabicové verze, u Windows 10 označené jako FPP, lze přenášet a mít nainstalovaný vždy a jen na jednom zařízení.
