It’s a brilliant idea, but unfortunately the reality is quite different

It really only works well with cat urine and a clumping litter. Unfortunately, the paint smears all over the drum. Even to places you cannot see or reach
If you think you won’t have to clean your cat’s litter tray so often, you might be mistaken
The front buttons often don't work
An open litter tray means you have to decide how long to set the cleaning cycle for after your cat has left the tray. Whether to let the faeces stink up the flat and wait for at least some of it to harden, or to let it spin round and smear it all over the mesh and the drum walls
Smeared poo isn't easy to clean up. The drum has a number of creases that you can’t reach with a cloth, so you’ll need to take the whole drum out and, ideally, place it in the garden and hose it down, or put it in the shower cubicle if it’s big enough
If you put too much sand in the drum or use heavier sand, the machine thinks there’s a cat inside and stops working. Then you have to remove the sand bit by bit and wait for the machine to realise that the sand isn’t a kitten. With heavier sand, this also means you have to top it up more often
It often falsely reports that the waste bin is full
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, it briefly reports that there is a cat in the drum
