For a long time, I used a roller with ‘protrusions’ – rather than a flat one – for stretching and massaging my muscles after a workout. I've just tried this and I have to say, it's much better.
I use the roller with the protrusions after a tough calisthenics workout to target the muscles between my shoulder blades, but for everyday use, this roller is better.
It looks like a cheap bit of plastic, but it’s actually really well made, and I regret not buying a flat roller like this sooner
