After the reviews here I bought them out of curiosity and the performance is below my expectations. They don't play badly, they play well (! ), but it is not true to slander "smaller plastic PC speakers".
I'm comparing it to the premium 2.1 Onkyo, Logitech Z-5500, Creative Megaworks 250 THX and Creative T30. I personally switched from 2.1/5.1 to 2.0 over time because I'm not tired of the bass from the subwoofer, but prefer cleaner, more flexible, punchier, less powerful, from both places. The closest these Edifiery 1700s come to the Creative T30 in terms of sound. It took me 20min and 15 different songs to finally write here that they sound a bit better than the "plastic Creative T30". If you didn't have them side by side, you wouldn't know the difference and your ears would get used to both. How are Edifiers better than Creative T30:
- you can hear more tone in them (mids and highs), the sound is a bit richer, the highs are clinkier
- the human voice is more distinct, more intelligible (songs and podcasts)
- the difference increases with volume - at medium to higher volumes the Edifiers are better than the Creative
- the difference is not noticeable at lower volumes
- they have DO In what way are Edifiery worse than Creative T30:
- they look like they're from the 80s
- they take up twice as much space

My Logitech z537 was gone and I was looking for a replacement. I required bluetooth, build quality that would last a while, and of course good sound. According to the reviews, we chose this model. Unfortunately, I guess I'm too used to the bass from a 2.1 setup and the sound without bass was a big disappointment for me. So I had to buy an EDIFIER T5 subwoofer. I have them as a replacement for the old Genius SW-5.1 HT (sound and subwoofer still good, but the power supply was humming, lots of boxes and cables, I just wanted 2x speakers for PC), for the other computer I have Bose Companion 2 III. That's just what I'm subjectively comparing it to.
I'm not an audiophile, they sound beautiful, but the bass is weaker in my opinion, for some genres of music and especially for games it's not right.
I wasn't expecting bass like the Genius (with subwoofer), but the Bose are probably more balanced, though probably weaker overall (I'll compare more sometime).
A subwoofer would have been useful, but I wanted to simplify the setup, not have another box under the desk, etc.
