Up to now I have been using soft hiking boots and more than 30 years old cross-country skis, which no longer have any edges at all. These boots are much higher, so on the one hand they give a lot of support to the foot, but they also restrict the ankle's movement much more. The boots are also much warmer, almost too much. Combination with old hiking skis in fresh snow off the trail due to limited foot movement was not great, but it was nice that the snow did not get into the boot and the foot was not bruised in the boot after about 20 km of trail walking in unpaved terrain. I'm getting new BC cross country skis, so hopefully I can appreciate these boots more then.
