Short version: The device is extremely dangerous when used with a battery, but it's good without one. Long version: The manual says to insert a rechargeable 9V battery into the detector for backup operation. After insertion, the battery is continuously charged with a current of just under 200mA. The charging is PERMANENT and never switches off. This causes the battery to get red-hot until all the electrolyte boils off (the device ruined a new battery of mine). Since the device only cost a few hundred, I took it apart. The charging "circuit" consists only of a 20 Ohm resistor connected to a rectified voltage of approx 14.5V from the power source inside the device. The calculation fits perfectly: (14.5V - 11V overcharged 9V) / 20 Ohm = 175mA. This is not a defect with my particular unit, as confirmed by other reviews. The manufacturer probably fitted a 200 (20 Ohm) component instead of a 202 (2 kOhm) resistor. At 2 kOhm, the charging current would be approx 2mA, which is an ideal, safe trickle charge. Although I replaced the resistor myself, I ran into another problem: backup operation on battery. The device continuously draws about 150mA from the 9V battery (due to the sensor heating up). A standard 200mAh 9V battery thus lasts less than an hour and a half. What's worse - the device has no protection against deep discharge. Once the battery is flat, it will drain it completely to zero, which causes the cells to reverse polarity and destroys the battery. Furthermore, after restoring mains power, the original circuit would pump a current of up to 500mA (14.5V - 4.5V) / 20 Ohm into such a deeply discharged battery, which is an extreme hazard. In my opinion, the device is extremely dangerous when used with a backup battery (risk of battery destruction, electrolyte leakage or fire). However, if you run it completely WITHOUT a battery, just from the 230V mains, it works without any problems. The sensor reacts quickly and with good sensitivity (slight warming of the casing where the sensor is located is normal). I can recommend it without a battery, but definitely not with one.
Reliable and sensitive gas detection when powered from the mains (230V)
Quick sensor response
Dangerous backup battery charging circuit - permanent overcharging with a current of almost 200mA (risk of boiling the battery/fire)
High consumption from the backup battery (~150mA), lasts less than 1.5 hours during a power cut.
Lacks any kind of protection against deep battery discharge.
The backup power from the 9V battery is unusable in practice and will destroy the battery or, in a worse case, cause a fire.
