Having finally given up any illusions that Narex is any better (it isn’t), I pragmatically opted for one of the cheapest saws. When it comes to electric tools (plug-in), there clearly isn’t a mid-range category (Narex gives that impression, but only in terms of price), and I’m not going to go for the higher-end ones (Stihl electric tools approaching the 10k price point) – I don’t believe they’d be five times better. and I don’t go near petrol (I don’t go into the woods). There are oak logs lying around here, some of which are wider than a skirting board. The older Narexky models (EPR 40-24, 45-25 HS) somehow managed it. Once they had reached the end of their useful life (or met a violent end), the choice fell on the ‘state-of-the-art’ EPR 400-24, based on blind trust in the Narex brand. New and elegant. But at least the old, clunky models had thermal protection that actually worked. Not this one, though. Of course, the machine should be loaded sensibly, but it is precisely this protection that should show you – at the outset and without causing any damage – where the limits lie. This GÜDE model clearly doesn’t have any thermal protection either. No. GÜDE doesn’t even have a soft start (or perhaps it does, but it’s just a lot ‘harsher’ than Narex – after all, it doesn’t trip the circuit breaker). That said, GÜDE costs half as much as Narex and is at least as good in terms of performance, perhaps even a tad better (I was a bit sceptical about the SDS tensioner, but it works surprisingly well). And it dispenses more oil than Narex, which is ideal for those thick trunks. And note – GÜDE are even more thorough in their instructions, as they specify a minimum impedance for the supply lead. So, to sum up: If this saw could handle a whole load (30 cubic metres) and then call it a day, that would be a good result.
sufficient power
good lubrication
a surprisingly effective tensioning mechanism
narrow oil-filling neck
it is not a soft start
