The MSI MPG Ai1600TS PCIE5 is a high-performance 1600W power supply for the most demanding computer set-ups. It supports the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards, is 80 PLUS Platinum certified (in Europe for 230V sockets; Titanium applies to 115V) and features high-quality, fully modular cabling (unfortunately without braided sheathing – just imitation). The biggest new feature is the GPU Safeguard+ technology, which uses an internal USB 2.0 connection to monitor the current on individual pins of the graphics card’s power connector. Monitoring works in MSI Center, MSI Afterburner and HWiNFO. In Afterburner, you can set alerts or automatically reduce the graphics card’s clock speed if a set limit is exceeded. However, the source’s protection limits themselves are fixed and cannot be changed. At a time when there are still reports of 12V-2x6 connectors burning out on high-performance graphics cards such as the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, a feature like this is essential. Via USB, you can also monitor the total power consumption of the entire computer system, the load on individual power supply rails and the power supply’s efficiency in real time. You’ll also appreciate its quiet operation – the fan remains off until power consumption exceeds approximately 800 W or the power supply temperature reaches 70 °C. When the temperature is exceeded, the fan is very quiet. I was also pleasantly surprised by the low level of coil whine, which is less pronounced than on my previous power supply, the ASUS ROG Thor 1000W Platinum II. On the other hand, the packaging looks rather ordinary. It just contains protective foam padding for the power supply, the manual and the cables, all in a nylon pouch. In this price range, I would have expected a higher-quality finish or a more extensive range of accessories. Although 1,600 W is unnecessarily high for most of today’s systems, it may provide an interesting margin for the future, should the next generations of graphics cards continue to increase their power consumption.
