I switched from the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 NFC to the Xiaomi Watch S5 mainly for two reasons – after changing my card, contactless payments stopped working on the band using the old Zepp Life app, and I wanted a longer battery life than just under a week (which had dropped from nearly a month and a half since my first Xiaomi fitness tracker).
With my usage, the Watch S5 lasts for more than two weeks (without the ‘always on’ feature enabled). Every day, I check the time and the weather, monitor my sleep whilst I’m asleep, check my heart rate, set my alarm, use the countdown timer and make payments. I occasionally track my swimming with a GPS.
Setting up the card was straightforward (Raiffeisenbank) and making payments is hassle-free.
A larger screen also means better readability and fewer problems when pressing the tiny buttons; I can enter my PIN first time round.
The standard leather strap is very nice, but as I wear my watch in the water during the summer, I bought an extra silicone strap in a matching colour.
The only disappointment is the strength of the vibrations – the watch is naturally heavier than the wristband and the vibrations are rather weak, so I had to set the alarm to ring as well, just to be on the safe side.
Overall, I’m very happy with the Xiaomi Watch S5. I’ve bought a smartwatch which, although it doesn’t have that many features or the option to install apps, does have the features I need, has a long battery life and looks nice.
