Although Nietzsche’s works are still being published (in the translation by O. that we are familiar with, F. ), here – presumably as part of some sort of ‘copyright licence’ for the translation – there has been a shift not only in the established meaning of ‘Übermensch’ within this marvellous philosophical work. Apparently, this was because the translator found the Nazis’ gross misuse of the word ‘Übermensch’ intolerable, so she rejected it – though not because ‘Nový člověk’ somehow better conveyed the meaning of Nietzsche’s work in Czech. All that remains is to hope that the translator’s ‘Superman’ does not haunt her in her sleep. It’s better to keep quiet; then perhaps one could debate the distinction between ‘New Man’ and ‘Superman’.
