ROLINE Media converter 100 Mb, RJ45 - ST, 100 BaseFX

The ROLINE 100 Mb, RJ45 - ST, 100 BaseFX Media Converter is used to transition from a metallic computer network to an optical network. The converter converts signals from the metallic RJ45 interface to an SC optical port, allowing two different types of transmission media to be interconnected within a single network infrastructure. The device operates at a transmission speed of 100 Mbps and is used for connecting remote network segments. The dark grey metal construction, weighing 210g, provides mechanical durability to the entire device, protects the internal components from damage, and ensures mechanical stability. Six LED indicators display the current status, power, and activity of the network ports. A 5.5 × 2.1mm (F) DC jack connector is used for power connection. The device is also equipped with a 24-pin connector, which is intended for connection to a central distribution unit.

Signal Transmission via the Optical Converter

The device supports IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u and IEEE 802.1q VLAN standards for stable data transmission. The integrated optical transceiver operates at a wavelength of 1,310nm for both transmission and reception. The optical part achieves a transmission power of -19 to -14dBm with a reception sensitivity of -31dBm on the SC optical interface side. The RJ45 metallic port supports the Auto MDI/MDIX function, which eliminates the need to use crossover cables during installation.

Configuration and Operating Modes

The converter requires a multi-mode optical cable with a specification of 62.5/125µm or 50/125µm to connect the optical part. Data can thus be transmitted over a distance of up to 2km at a speed of 100 Mbps via the SC optical interface. A category 5 UTP cable or higher is used to connect the TP metallic port. The device supports full duplex or half duplex operating modes for flexible integration into various network infrastructures. Users can set the operating modes using five DIP switches and three jumpers, which the manufacturer has placed under the device's cover. The ROLINE 10 Media Converter allows data transmission in store-and-forward mode with a packet size of up to 1522b. The second option is smart-forward mode, which processes packets with no size limit. Power is supplied via an external source with a voltage in the range of 4.45 to 12.6V.
