The history of coffee from the Dominican Republic

In the old days, in 1720, the Frenchman Gabriel de Clieu set out from the visit of King Louis XIV. on a long cruise to the island of Martinique. He carried with him a gift from the royal estate - two coffee plants. Legend has it that, while crossing the Atlantic, there was a complete lack of wind and de Clieu was stranded on the open sea. As the days went on, supplies ran low and the plants began to wilt. Gabriel de Clieu sacrificed his last supply of water to the coffee trees. Soon the wind began to blow again, the sails were set, and de Clieu sailed happily to Martinique with one plant which, thanks to his sacrifice, survived. Between 1725 and 1735, the plants made their way to the island of Hispaniola, where the Dominican Republic is today. Coffee trees began to grow abundantly in the rich soil there, giving rise to what is now one of the oldest coffee plantations in the New World.

About growing in the Dominican Republic

The Barahona region of the Dominican Republic boasts a truly unique climate for growing - year-round rains, warm ocean currents and mild trade winds are all ideal conditions for a long growing season. This allows the coffee berries to open slowly, guaranteeing perfect quality. In the Dominican Republic, the high quality and low acidity of its coffee is such a prized and popular commodity that, unlike other Central and Latin American countries that export most of their coffee, much of it remains on the island, where it is considered the elixir of life. In 2007, 4 500 tonnes of coffee were produced for export by 50 000 growers in the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic Barahona coffee is characterized by a sweet, rich, full-bodied taste with a very mild acidity. The delicious aroma is just a pleasant addition to what happens in your mouth after the first sip of this coffee.

Aromaniac Roastery

Since 2007, when they started with coffee, (they) drank too much. And it was the opening of our own roastery that gradually started to make more and more sense. He truly believes that anyone can fall for the taste and smell of coffee. And that's what they're worried about now. They make sure that coffee finds everyone, because one day it will find everyone. Seriously. You just have to know how to use it. The beans are roasted here in small batches every day. It's to keep it fresh. So you won't get any that are more than a few days old. Aromaniac doesn't want to offer you anything they don't drink themselves. That's why they carefully choose what goes through the roaster and what you get in your cup at home.
