This information stems from the sales statistics of Alza.cz, the largest online store in the Czech Republic. "While in 2010 smartphone sales accounted for less than half the turnover from mobile phones sales, this year we expect the share will approach 90%," says Sarka Jakoubková, PR manager at Alza.cz.
The increase in smartphone popularity is not only due the capability to access the Internet and entertainment, smartphones continue to offer new, sophisticated technologies and services. Recent trends include larger, lighter, curved or flexible displays with special coatings, biometric sensors, fingerprint or iris, the possibility to use two operating systems, and NFC technology for wireless electronic communications. The convenience of popular applications, maps and social networking tools to communicate and share content adds further appeal.
"As for ordinary mobile phones, the market will not disappear entirely, but will represent a significant minority of users who value battery life, ease of use and classic phone keypads," says Jakoubková.
According to Alza.cz sales statistics, the average user changes their mobile phone every 30 months. However, smartphone users usually retain their device for around one-third longer due to the utility value of models increasing. "Many customers rotate mobile phones frequently, even annually. Fans of new technologies often demand the latest model in the market, with others desiring new mobile or design features. We often hear that customers purchase new devices, then pass their older models to friends or family, in turn greatly increasing the use and awareness of smartphones." said Jakoubková.
The best selling smartphone brand in Alza.cz is Samsung, followed by Nokia, Prestigio, HTC and Sony. In terms of turnover, the very popular iPhone occupies second place, followed by Nokia, HTC and LG.
