Problems causing AdBlue crystallization

On a car with an SCR catalytic converter, the catalytic converter is installed behind the engine and the urea solution tank is located on the vehicle. The AdBlue solution is injected from the tank into the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic converter. During catalytic reduction, NOX is converted to nitrogen, oxygen and water. A sufficiently high exhaust gas temperature of at least 400 °C is a prerequisite for the SCR catalytic converter to function properly. This can be difficult in urban traffic, for example. If the exhaust gas temperature drops below 200°C, the SCR catalyst is no longer active and the NOX reduction rate decreases. If the catalytic converter is not at the correct operating temperature, i.e. if the temperature is between 200°C and 400°C, urea clusters start to form and clog the exhaust system. This can cause blockages in the catalytic converter, which can lead to partial or complete damage to the catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is not working properly, the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) will throttle the engine's performance, resulting in increased fuel consumption.
