Victron Battery Balancer

The Victron Energy Battery Balancer equalises the state of charge of two series-connected 12V batteries, or of several parallel strings of series-connected batteries. As soon as the charging voltage in a 24V system rises to more than 27.3V, the Battery Balancer is activated and compares the voltage of the two series-connected batteries. The balancer can divert a current of up to 0.7A from the battery (or parallel-connected batteries) with the higher voltage to the other battery. The resulting differential charging current ensures that all batteries will end up with an identical state of charge. Battery balancers can also be connected in parallel for more complex systems. For a 48V system, a total of three balancers are used (see diagrams).

Key Features of the Victron Energy Battery Balancer

  • Equalises the state of charge of two series-connected 12V batteries
  • Activates at a charging voltage higher than 27.3V
  • Diverts a current of up to 0.7A from the more charged battery to the less charged one
  • LED indication of status and voltage deviation between batteries
  • Alarm relay for when the battery voltage difference is greater than 0.2V
  • With overheat protection

The Alarm Relay Explained

In its normal state, it is open (inactive). It closes (activates) when the red LED lights up, i.e., when the voltage difference between the batteries is greater than 0.2V. As soon as the red LED goes off, the relay opens (deactivates) again (the voltage difference between the batteries drops below 0.14V).
Explanation of the LED indicators:
Green LED: The device is active and the measured voltage is higher than 27.3V
Upper orange LED: The voltage deviation is greater than 0.1V
Lower orange LED: The voltage deviation is greater than 0.1V
Red LED: The alarm is triggered if the difference between the monitored batteries is greater than 0.2V. The alarm persists until the difference is less than 0.14V or until the system voltage drops below 26.6V
Installation:
The battery balancer(s) must be installed on a well-ventilated vertical surface close to the batteries (but not directly above them, due to the possible effect of gases from the batteries!). If required, install the alarm contact wiring and the reset wiring. Use a cable of at least 0.75mm² to connect the negative, positive, and mid-point terminals (in this order!). The balancer is ready for operation. When the voltage on any of the monitored batteries (strings) rises above 27.3V (during charging), the green LED will light up, indicating that the balancer is activated. If, in this situation, the deviation of the batteries (strings) is greater than 50mV, active balancing begins, i.e., compensation of the difference between the batteries (strings). If the deviation reaches 100mV, one of the orange LEDs is activated. A deviation greater than 200mV will trigger the alarm relay. In a series-parallel battery arrangement, the mid-point interconnection cabling between the parallel strings must be of a size that can handle the corresponding current if part of the battery becomes disconnected.
Alarm reset:
The alarm can be switched off by connecting the outputs marked RESET to each other – this can be done using a switch.
