Infectious mononucleosis
Infectious mononucleosis, is a febrile viral disease that is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This virus belongs to the herpesvirus group and is one of the most common causes of mononucleosis, especially in young adults and teenagers. It is transmitted mainly by saliva or droplets, which is why it is called "kissing disease". Initially, it manifests itself as angina or flu (it can also occur without symptoms and accompanied by mild fatigue). The main symptoms in children include swelling of the lymph nodes, mainly the cervical and axillary nodes, but rarely the groin nodes. Children usually respond to infection with fever and extreme fatigue, which does not subside and is not treated with antibiotics. There is no specific antiviral treatment for mononucleosis, so the main goal of therapy is to relieve symptoms - getting enough rest, hydration, pain relievers and fever reduction.
Who the test is suitable for and when to use it
You should use the test if you have the following symptoms
- Fatigue and weakness
- Pain in the neck
- Enlargement of lymph nodes in the neck, behind the ears and in the groin area
- Fever
- Skin rash
How the test works
- Sampling:First, a sample is taken from the blood of the finger using a lancet (similar to e.g. in the CRP test)
- Sample application: The blood sample is injected onto the testing device in a so-called sample wells
- Reaction:Subsequently, 1 drop of solution (buffer) is applied to the sample well, causing a reaction
- Evaluation of results: After approximately 5 minutes, you can check the result
How to read the result
- Positive: Two coloured lines are displayed, with any shade of the test line indicating a positive result for infectious mononucleosis. We recommend a visit to the doctor for further examination.
- Negative:A coloured line appears only in the control area - the test did not detect infectious mononucleosis. However, if symptoms persist, a consultation with a doctor is recommended.
- If the control line does not appear, the test was performed incorrectly and must be repeated with a new test.
