Why is it important to breathe through your nose?

Breathing through your nose can help overcome or alleviate fatigue, morning grogginess, waking up to urinate, brain fog, asthma, allergies, sleep apnoea, reduced performance, concentration problems, snoring, and even high blood pressure. It also prevents as many impurities from entering the body.

How does it work?

Breathing through the mouth leads to "over-breathing" or excessive breathing. The air entering our body is not restricted as it would be if it flowed through the small nostrils. This means more air enters the body than the organism requires at that moment. At the same time, we also exhale a larger amount of CO2, which leads to low concentrations, and the brain cannot signal haemoglobin to release oxygen into the necessary tissues. So, we have a surplus of oxygen, but the small amount of carbon dioxide prevents us from using it. It is also important to realise that when we breathe through our nose, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for regeneration, rest, and digestion. In contrast, breathing through the mouth is linked to the sympathetic nervous system, which is in charge of action, fight or flight.

Try this

Dr. Buteyko's morning control measurement of CO2 levels in the blood:

  • Gently and quietly inhale, then gently and quietly exhale again
  • Pinch your nose with your fingers and time how long it takes until you feel the first urge to inhale again. This should be a comfortable breath-hold; do not push yourself
  • Release your nose and inhale. The inhalation should again be gentle and calm; if it is sharp and loud, you held your breath for too long and the test is invalid
  • 60 seconds is, according to Dr. Buteyko, a sign of perfect health, corresponding to a 6.5% concentration of CO2 in the blood
  • over 40 seconds is the time for healthy people without asthmatic problems
  • 20–40 seconds means that most asthmatic symptoms are gone, but they may appear if a trigger occurs
  • under 10 seconds indicates asthma and related physical difficulties, such as shortness of breath, coughing, or restless sleep

How to use

Clean and thoroughly dry the area around your mouth. Remove the protective film. Close your mouth so that your lips are fully touching. Place the "cross" vertically with its centre over your mouth. Press down on both ends and gently rub to secure.
