The Effect of Tocotrienols in the Brain
Tocotrienols have a shorter and more flexible side chain, which allows them to be transported more easily across the blood-brain barrier and, unlike alpha-tocopherol, they are not dependent on tocopherol transporters. Tocotrienols disperse better in the cell membranes of neurons and act deeper within brain cells, protecting them from oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body is disrupted. Free radicals are molecules that can disrupt the function and structure of cells. Vitamin E neutralises free radicals and protects cells from oxidative stress.

Not all sources of vitamin E are of the same quality. Annatto (Bixa orellana) is unique in that it contains almost exclusively tocotrienols (up to 90%), while other sources, such as palm oil or wheat germ, have a high proportion of alpha-tocopherol. It therefore provides the purest form of tocotrienols, which have a higher bioavailability.
